My Soul...

… is worth more
Than I am willing
To pay
For its upkeep.

I thought and was taught

I entered the shop no thoughts in my head,
”Can I help you?”, the polite young salesman said.
A bulb flashed in my brain,
We had so much to gain,
”Can you do something, no matter how big or small
to make this world a better place”, and I smiled.
He thought and was taught and I walked away.

He entered the pub with thoughts in his head,
”Can I help you?”, the polite young barmaid said.
A bulb flashed in his brain,
We had so much to gain,
”Thank you, no”, he put £2 in the charity box and smiled.
She thought and was taught and he walked away.

She entered her home with thoughts in her head,
She went up to her boyfriend already in bed.
A bulb flashed in her brain,
We had so much to gain,
”I think we’ll visit your mother this weekend” and she smiled.
He thought and was taught.

I entered the shop no thoughts in my head,
”Can I help you?”, the polite young salesman said.
A bulb flashed in my mind,
But I pulled up the blind,
”Er, no thanks just looking”, I frowned
And the world just turned round.

Where is my Present?

My right palm met the small of her back,
Her response, much harsher than the fiercest of smacks,
Succumb she did, but with the arch of her bone,
It was time to face the trouble at home.

Where is my present?

An honest enquiry shrieked love’s decline,
This love of ours was no longer mine,
As I pulled her to me and offered embrace,
I could see the fear that contorted her face.

Where is my present?

The me, the she, were inextricably we,
But she knew I intended to somehow break free,
Two lives in one was what we had become,
But the I in we sensed the set of the sun.

Where is my present?

You, my dearest love, must go it alone,
Make you, not we, your abiding throne,
Don’t see me when you awake in your bed,
Look for your presence inside your head.

Together Alone

going forward
allotted time
seek to reminisce
life’s gold mine
hoping against each other
your will is not mine
fine
be calm
be peaceful
open your heart
open all that can
make for days
to come and go
and slow
and feel
and see
and so
we know
how to be alone with one
and one alone with one
to be ourselves no more
than we will always be
together alone

My First Kiss

Karen,
My sister's friend.

"Go on, It's her birthday,
Give her a kiss."

Just out of the army,
A serious, shy youth,
I don't know,
Didn't know.

How.

"Go on."

"Would you like a
Birthday kiss?"

She stared at me,
Two years older
Than I.

I waited,
Seeming hours filtered
Through my brain.

"OK."

She grabbed me
To her.
She held my face
In her hands
And slipped her
Warm, moist tongue,
Into my virginal
Mouth.

Naivety!

When the Major
Told me at camp
That the 'effin
Russians were
After us,
And I wondered
Why?

Why the Russians?

Didn't they used
To be our
Allies?

And now
Karen,
Blonde, sensual, sexy,
Pressed harder with
Her delicious tongue,
I was shocked.
A tongue!

I once more
Grew as a man.

As one fear grew,
Another lessened,
And the boy
Felt less a boy.

Unrequited

A love unrequited
With no need of blame.
I thought of you today,
And breathed out your name.

My breath took wing
And flew to the sky,
Hitchhiked a ride
From a lark passing by.

Flew over the church
Where the sweet bells rang,
Invigorating Breath
To sing, and he sang.

A song of joy
He carried on his way
As He jumped on a cloud
With silver spray.

A lining of hope
As sun stroked rain,
Hope losing faith,
I'll ever kiss you again.

You went to the window
As if summoned by love,
As warm fragrant Breath
Floated down from above.

His last final act
Sent shivers to your spine.
His tender last kiss
Entombed in your shrine.

You'll ever be mine,
You'll never be mine!
