The launch of a best friend’s 1st poetry book in February 2008 gave me the inspiration to try my hand at writing poetry myself. The first poem ‘free our earth’ was penned the very next morning. However, the sceptic in me decided that it must be rubbish as it only took 15 minutes to write. Coming from a research background I read it out to some people at work to gauge reaction. They thought it was great and gave me some ideas for other poems. Soon I was ‘writing to order’ and enjoying it too! The poems seemed to ‘come to me’ easily.

Within a month I was writing 3-4 poems a day, the workmates were running out of ideas but my poetic juices were already flowing. ‘Lines’ came at me from nowhere. I could be in the shower, in bed, driving or just having a general conversation and something would enter my head and I would think that’s a great line/title for a poem. A note book became essential and a whole new world opened up for me, one where I found I was able to express myself in a way I had never dreamt possible. In July 2008, 370 poems later and with lots of encouragement I decided to publish my own book. ‘A Different Perspective’ is my first book of poetry and is a collection of feelings and views that encompasses, love, life, humour and tackles some of the more serious issues facing our communities today.

My Poetry Is My Healer

My heart needs healing; let me find my pen,
The flowing sensations are at it again,
Where are the words I see in intermittent visions?
The ones that if clearly stated need no revisions,
Productive scribbling on the back of a letter,
That somehow led to a bit of a thought setter,
Ramblings often just circling around in my head,
Sometimes they come to me whilst I’m in bed,
A new phase for me; this is something new and inviting
And I am finding each fresh challenge so very exciting,
I want to thank Angee for the introduction she made,
I just can’t thank her enough for the part she played.

Away

Away from my audience,
I have a different presence,
Something that no one would believe,
But I don’t deliberately deceive,
Away from my outer shell,
I have been back and forth to hell,
Something that not many know,
But I don’t dare to let it show,
Away from my comfort zone,
I have felt unbelievably alone,
Something that I refuse to embrace,
But I don’t publicise the disgrace,
Away from my bitter fate,
I have endured every pet hate,
Something that I feel is my destiny,
But I don’t think all the rest can see,
Away from my darkest night,
I have put up a valiant fight,
Something that I have battled for years,
But I don’t want to bore you with my tears.
